The writing retreat…

So given that I’ll be lucky enough to be sitting by Lake Garda tomorrow lunch time for a few days, I thought it might be the right time to talk about ‘the perfect writing retreat’.

I’ve worked in the same industry since my working life began which has allowed me to travel the world exploring a number of incredible countries. However, I have only recently started to think about future holidays and short breaks as ‘writing retreats’.

So why are writing retreats so important? Probably for the same reasons as a holiday or a weekend away is. Let’s face it, we all need a break. A break away from every day life frees the mind and body even if it’s only for a short while. A new place, a new mind. A peaceful outlook, a peaceful mind. Sometimes a writer just needs to free his or hers mind of every day life. A clear mind can bring exciting new words, phrases and direction to a novel.

So I thought I had found my writer’s retreat a few weeks ago in Venice but we’ll see what Lake Garda brings this weekend! What would your perfect writing retreat consist of and where would it be?

Take care all and a big thank you to my most recent followers for joining me on this journey. My new DCI Morgan novel is not far away so watch this space! #DCIMorgan

Writing crime…

My faithful followers, I hope you’re all having a great weekend.

As you know, my first novel ‘A Hole in Serenity’, fell into the psychological thriller category. A genre that I am extremely passionate about both in book form and on screen. My new project, the first in a new crime series, has been an altogether different challenge posing various obstacles along the way.

So where do those differences lie?

For starters, I’ve had to research policing ranks and policies within the police force. This is a MUST when writing stories that involve the police. An understanding of the ranks is imperative in order to address who answers to who from top to bottom.

Secondly, what every crime novel has, is a crime scene. The order of events and who is involved needs to be researched so that no stone is left unturned.

Lastly, press conferences and statements have to be researched to fully understand how they are given and what is at stake when they are delivered. In my opinion, this moment is essential in any successful crime novel or crime television drama.

I’m not far off finishing this first instalment which I am very excited about! Watch this space!

Thank you, as always to each and every one of you for your continued support and a big welcome to my most recent followers!

Take care and I’ll be in touch soon,

My loyal followers, A Hole in Serenity is finally available in paperback across all Amazon platforms!! If you’re looking for a summer holiday read, please give it a go! I might be bias but I think you’ll enjoy it! Take care and thank you so much as always for your support!! Mark

So why write…?

For those of you out there who have one day dreamed of being the next J K Rowling or Roald Dahl, you are not alone. There are hundreds of thousands of aspiring writers and authors out there who are also looking for their hard work to one day be rewarded.

I can only speak for myself when I say this but I genuinely do not believe for one second that many are in the writing game for fame and fortune. The majority of us write because we love it. Having the freedom to not only invent a story but to then take it in whichever direction you choose, is priceless. It is a gift that no writer would ever give up.

For me the end result of seeing my book for sale on well known platforms really is what it’s all about.  Sitting back and thinking ‘wow. That’s my book’.

Writing also takes me to a place of tranquility. A place where no one else can enter. A mindset so deep it cannot be broken. Having this other world that writers live in is like having a big secret. A fictional secret. A place to escape to that only you understand but equally a place that only you needs to understand.

If you’ve ever thought about writing, give up the thought and just do it. Trust me, you won’t look back.

I’ll be back soon with an update from DCI Morgan! Thank you all so much as always for your incredible support

Take care
