Bestseller? You decide!

Good evening all,

I hope you are well and had a good weekend. Happy Monday!!It’s about time I shared a few of my latest writing antics with you so thought I’d start on what I believe makes an international bestseller, or at least who I believe should make that decision.

Now I can only give my opinion based on previous reads, my own work and also my genre. I can’t sit here and pretend that I know everything there is to know about writing a fantasy novel or a rom-com! So let’s stick with a good thriller or crime novel.

Firstly, I have recently finished two books of which I won’t name but both by very reputable authors and both of which have hit the best-selling charts. I believe that there are certain ‘must haves’ such as a gripping plot, enticing characters and either a twist or an unexpected ending of some kind. I believe a story should be both descriptive and addictive throughout. The plot should be well thought through and executed in a way that leaves readers wanting the authors next piece of work.

Now both of these books had the above but the first had an incredible overuse of three to four word sentences. I believe on one occasion, I had well over 50 fullstops on just one page! I think short sharp sentences are a fantastic way to build tension but too many can interupt a stories flow. At one point I even said to myself, ‘is this for real?’

The second book was a great read and incomparable to the first. It sucked you into the story and described the characters and scenes so well that you too were stood there with them in the room. This was a book deserved of it’s place in the chart.

From a writer trying to make it in this competitive world of varied writing styles and genres, the first book confused me somewhat. What it did do is make me realise that I’m not as far behind these guys as first thought and to keep going. Each writer develops his or hers own writing style. There is no rule as each reader expects different things from a writer. Only you can decide what makes a bestseller.

If you’re an aspiring writer in this maze of publishing companies and literary agents, keep going and do it for yourself. Others will judge you no matter what so that’s something you will never change. Stick with it and be proud!

Take care my faithful and keep your eyes peeled for Chasing Shadows, the first in my new crime series featuring DCI Morgan.

Thank you once again for your continued support!
