Good evening my loyal followers,
I hope you are all well.
I’ve been thinking about creative writing techniques recently and thought I would share a couple of ideas that I have with you. For all you writer’s out there, these techniques are bound to help you along the way.
Take an object, any object. You have one in your mind? Now in its simplest term, it could just be a fork or a wine glass or maybe a newspaper. Now bring it to life with words. That fork is suddenly not just a fork anymore but a tool used to fuel our appetite and feed the mouth of our young. You see where I’m going with this?
Another technique is to turn the sound down on the television and create your very own running commentary. Describe the actions of the people you see and their surroundings. This is one of my favourites as you can add a slice of comedy!
Let me know how you get on and if you have any other suggestions for creative writing experiments.
Thank you as always to each of you for your loyal support. As we speak, I am writing the penultimate chapter in my new crime novel. Watch this space!
Good evening my loyal followers,
I hope you are all well.
I am heading out to the peaks district tomorrow for a big day working on my new novel. I’m not far off the finishing line now!
I am also going live on Sunday evening on Facebook and would welcome any questions you may have. All questions are welcome! It would be great if you could join me. The link is below.
I look forward to hearing from you Sunday!
Good morning my faithful! I hope you are all safe and well! As a born and bread southerner now living in Manchester, the past weeks have been terrifying, unthinkable and humbling, all rolled into one. As a writer, writing sometimes about not so nice things fictitiously, I believe it’s my place to use words to express how I feel and to honour those affected by these terrible events.
From North to South is a very short poem that I wrote in a few minutes this morning. Love to all…
From North to South
From North to South our world’s collide
These acts from which we cannot hide
Our thoughts and prayers with those in need
And all those ruined by this senseless deed
As time goes on our hearts will heal
Yet nothing makes this mess seem real
Signs of hope and signs of love
Will help us all to rise above
We are proud, we are loud to fight this pain
The memories of our past remain
Each day, each night that we look back
We’ll all hold hands and stay on track
From North to South we are now one
To fight against what they have done
Our angels will look down on all
To see us through these times of cruel
As we go on with heads held high
We’ll still shed tears no shame to cry
As you look down from every cloud
We are North, we are South, we’ll make you proud
Good evening my faithful!! I hope you are all well.
Firstly let me apologise for the lack of contact this month. May has been an extremely busy month for me so thank you all for being patient. My new novel is taking shape nicely and having just finished chapter 12, the finishing line is well and truly in sight!
So I thought it may be interesting for you to be formerly introduced to my new character at the helm, DCI Morgan. He is the beating heart, the main man and the centre piece to my new novel, the first in a new crime series.
This book is written in first person which as many of you writer’s know, and I have now discovered, is not easy to write in at all. So from the beginning, this has been a real challenge. They say that a book written in first person can unknowingly become a book about the author. It is very difficult sometimes to ignore how you feel as a writer or what you may say personally to then think about what your main character may say instead. You must think, talk and act like they do, not like you the writer would. Not an easy task, trust me!!
So DCI Morgan has his own traits, own personality and makes his own decisions. I just help him on his journey. I’m excited about this book and the adventures of DCI Morgan going forward. I believe in him and I hope you do too!
As always thank you for staying so loyal and thank you to all my most recent followers for joining this journey. Please don’t forget to join me for a live Q & A via Facebook live. More details can be found via my Facebook page.
So given that I’ll be lucky enough to be sitting by Lake Garda tomorrow lunch time for a few days, I thought it might be the right time to talk about ‘the perfect writing retreat’.
I’ve worked in the same industry since my working life began which has allowed me to travel the world exploring a number of incredible countries. However, I have only recently started to think about future holidays and short breaks as ‘writing retreats’.
So why are writing retreats so important? Probably for the same reasons as a holiday or a weekend away is. Let’s face it, we all need a break. A break away from every day life frees the mind and body even if it’s only for a short while. A new place, a new mind. A peaceful outlook, a peaceful mind. Sometimes a writer just needs to free his or hers mind of every day life. A clear mind can bring exciting new words, phrases and direction to a novel.
So I thought I had found my writer’s retreat a few weeks ago in Venice but we’ll see what Lake Garda brings this weekend! What would your perfect writing retreat consist of and where would it be?
Take care all and a big thank you to my most recent followers for joining me on this journey. My new DCI Morgan novel is not far away so watch this space! #DCIMorgan
